Southface Energy Institute Breaks Ground on Landmark Green Building

(09/01/2005)

Ground was broken in July on the Southface Eco Office, a building its developers are calling a "landmark" green building project that is being designed to earn the Southeast's first LEED Platinum-level rating for new construction from the U.S. Green Building Council.

The owner for the Southface Eco Office is the non-profit organization Southface Energy Institute. Lord, Aeck & Sargent of Atlanta is the architect; and Eco Office Contractors: A Green Building Consortium, is the construction group. The building group includes DPR Construction, Hardin Construction, Holder Construction, Skanska USA Building and The Winter Construction Co., all of Atlanta. Hardin is serving as the construction manager

The project's first phase, targeted for completion in spring 2006, includes a three-story, 10,000-sq.-ft. structure that the owner intends to serve as a model of environmentally responsible commercial construction. The owner's goal is that it will demonstrate that green commercial building creates a healthy and productive workplace with reduced operating costs and to showcase innovative ideas for saving energy and water, reducing waste, re-using and recycling materials, and maintaining a healthy indoor environment.

"When completed, the Eco Office will be one of the greenest commercial buildings in the world," claimed Dennis Creech, executive director of Southface, a non-profit organization that promotes sustainable homes, workplaces and communities.
