The national association also presented U.S. Senator Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) with its “Free Enterprise Legislator of the Year” award. According to ABC, the award recognizes a member of Congress “whose public service parallels the ideals upon which ABC was founded: the principles of full and open competition and the advancement of the free-market system.”

DeMint is the sponsor of the Secret Ballot Protection Act, a bill to amend the National Labor Relations Act to ensure the right of employees to a secret-ballot election conducted by the National Labor Relations Board; and the Truth in Employment Act, legislation that would eliminate the practice of salting, by which union organizers obtain jobs with nonunion employers for the purpose of helping their co-workers form a union.

UCA of North Fla. Wins National Award

The Utility Contractors Association of North Florida, based in Jacksonville, was recently awarded the National Utility Contractors Association’s “William H. Clausen Community Service Award” for helping develop and build Seamark Ranch, a 468-acre home for abused and abandoned children near Jacksonville.

UCANF adopted Seamark Ranch as its official charity in 2003. The entity is supported solely by private donations of capital and in-kind services.

During 2006, UCANF and its members continued site-work design and permitting; continued construction of the first boys’ home; participated in fund-raising activities; and donated $1,000 in retail gift cards. The association also contributed $478,464 in in-kind donations with 15 member firms working on the excavation of a large lake and construction of a berm.

“These sorts of projects are great opportunities to do something more than just the day-in and day-out business,” said Ryan Schmitt, vice president and general manager with UCANF member firm A.J. Johns, who first brought the Seamark Ranch idea to UCANF’s attention. “There is a reward in helping give kids a place they can call home that goes far beyond the bottom-line dollar.”
